Summer Movies! Every person loves to go to the theatre to see a movie, but what should they see this summer? Here’s a list of 12 movies for viewers, straight from The PENNANT.
Before the list begins, though, is a fun fact on how Rotten Tomatoes (one of the primary rating services for movies) works. A rating of 70% means that, out of the 100% of “Rotten” Tomatoes that they have, the critics retain 70% of them–but 30% are “thrown.” This works the same with the Popcorn Meter they use, although that is decided off how many of the non-critics refuse throwing.
First is a movie that has already been released: Mortal Kombat 2! Mortal Kombat is originally a popular video game but got its first movie adaptation in 1995. And now, it’s time for the next! This sequel was set for 2025 but was delayed until this May. Its release date on May 8 gave the community a good view on how it rates, and Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t lie. The critics give only a 68%…but a 90% rating on the Popcorn Meter! “I think this is the best one, in my opinion, as far as fighting,” says a redditor who has already viewed the movie.
The Sheep Detectives, a story featuring Hugh Jackman, is already one of the most popular new releases of the year. From its release, the movie scored a 94% on the Tomatometer, and a 96% on the Popcorn! The story centers around a caring farmer who reads detective stories to his sheep at bedtime. However, when this farmer goes missing, those Little Lambs knew what to do! The movie is full of fun and witty laughs–definitely a go-to!
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, which releases on May 22 is another movie set in the Star Wars galaxy. It focuses around The Mandalorian and his friend/adoptive child Grogu, after the finale of the show’s season three. The show is not based on a specific series of books, yet it is loosely made with the lore of Star Wars in mind. Many fans are excited about this upcoming movie sequel, due to the high popularity of the previous show.
I Love Boosters releases on the same date (May 22) and is another comedy–but with a very different plot. Professional Shoplifters go around stealing clothes and reselling them at better prices. This, of course, opens up plenty of opportunities for good laughs, earning themselves a 94% rating on the Tomatometer.
The Backrooms movie is highly anticipated, being a psychological horror with much lore backing it. The massive fanbase backing it equates to little difficulty for the movie to gain backing. The idea of the backrooms came from a 2019 Creepypasta and was made into a web series by Kane Parsons. Its release on May 29 is projected to earn $71 million at the box office, due primarily to the excitement surrounding it. Keep an eye out for this movie, and try to get a ticket ASAP!
He-Man, shockingly, originally was introduced as part of a line of action figures. He gained popularity in the packaging’s minicomics and was adapted into a show late 1983. Even though it was canceled after 2 seasons, the memory of the show lived on, inspiring such shows as ThunderCats and the ever popular She-Ra: Princess of Power and remake. This movie is bringing back the barbarian classic and creating a whole new take on the character. With awesome battles and a nostalgic feel, Masters of the Universe is a great pick this summer. Maybe even plan on buying parents a ticket for its release on June 5.
Everyone and their grandparents know the classic Toy Story, and fans are getting excited for the newest in the series! Toy Story 5, releasing in theatres on June 19, follows the toys of Bonnie and their newest threat, a… smart tablet? The character, Lilypad, is the main villain of the story, attempting to convince Bonnie to give up on traditional toys and make fun with the tablet. This story reaches far from the classic story to show whole new threats but keeps the original characters such as Woody in sight.
Everyone knows Superman, but for some time now, his regularly overlooked cousin has been in the spotlight. With her new movie on June 26, she is getting all the attention she deserves. Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, will be finally getting her movie. After the previous Superman movie, this one will be set in the same universe, meaning audiences get to see the beloved Krypto, superdog, and maybe a cameo from the Man of Steel himself. The excitement surrounding the upcoming release is almost too much for many to bear!
Little, yellow, evil guys: Audiences all know them as the Minions. After a three-year wait, their story continues in Minions & Monsters! On July 1, the little dudes will be on the screen in theatres for all to see. This movie will focus on another ridiculous adventure from the small men, one featuring the oceanic titan Cthulhu! Not much to say for this movie, it can speak for itself! Keep an eye out, because the tickets will sell out fast!
Moana, the movie about a girl going on an adventure with a stranger on the ocean, is getting its Live Action Adaptation! Airing July 10, Moana will be played by Catherine Laga’aia, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be the hero Maui. Back in 2016, the movie made a whopping $687 Million, and that record will likely be broken this year! Keep an eye out for this summer special.
Tom Holland and Zendaya, the talk of the movie community for a long time now, are being featured in one of the coolest Greek-themed movies of the time! Watch The Odyssey on July 17 to see fan favorite celebrities–including Matt Damon as Odysseus–performing old-school stories. The Greek story of Odysseus is a perilous one, dating back hundreds of years ago. The adventure, centered around a legendary man, is being replayed in its most action-packed way for all to enjoy.
The Spider-Menace strikes again in his newest movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day! This follows Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which ends with the world forgetting the existence of Peter Parker. Since the release of the trailer, it’s been the talk of the Marvel community, especially based on one dark, little known fact.
Hidden within the comics of Spider-Man, there is a story unlike the others, one about Man-spider. Not a typo, but a variant of the Spider-Man fans all know and love, who mutates even more from the radioactive spider’s bite. The transformation begins after he is seriously injured and wraps himself within a cocoon, only to wake up later–somehow alive and with organic web fluid. The transformation then slowly begins. The trailer for the movie has a short scene where Parker emerges from a cocoon, leading people to believe they will be getting a movie adaptation of one of the saddest Spider-Man stories. Keep an eye out, for this Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s release on July 31.
