Girls Basketball has already taken to the court, and Boys Basketball tryouts are slated for Nov. 10. However, one does not need to be on an official team to reap the benefits of the sport. In fact, joining an intramural team or even just a pick-up game could be the best decision ever!
“Basketball offers a lot when it comes to mental health,” explains an article from the New York Daily. “It does not just help players develop stronger muscles and bones, it also helps keep their mind sharp.” The article highlights the importance of “focus” to the game. “Players need to make split-second decisions in the middle of a play, and this takes a certain level of mental sharpness.” Concluding, the article asserts that basketball players are among the fittest athletes. “The sport requires players to constantly move and turn, giving them a full-body workout. This is unlike other sports where players can have a minute or two to relax before the next break of play.”
Boys Basketball Coach Bodie Bender agrees. “Basketball is a great sport that teaches you team camaraderie and life skills and lessons. We try to relate what we do on the floor in practice, film sessions, and games to real life situations.” On a more personal note, Bender adds, “I also love to coach the great game of basketball. First off,” he explains, “being a head basketball coach in this state is special with all of our history!” In fact, such terms as “Hoosier Hysteria” were derived due to Indiana’s love of college basketball. “When I went off to college,” Bender recalls, “I always had the competitive spirit to stay around basketball, and I knew at that point my playing days were over, so the second best option is to coach this great game, as well as develop and build respectful young men!”
Bender encourages all who are interested to try out. Not only will it improve one’s physical fitness, speed, and coordination, but it will help develop crucial life skills, such as teamwork, leadership, and discipline. These skills are required in all aspects of a person’s life. “Unlike individual sports,” states Royal Basketball School, “basketball thrives on teamwork. Playing basketball means being part of a team–forging new friendships and experiencing a sense of community. Competing with teammates cultivates confidence and sportsmanship as you learn to work together and face other teams on the court.”
While having one’s name on a jersey can be an exciting element to the game, a deeper sense of satisfaction comes from what one accomplishes through it–both on and off the court. “That feeling of putting on your team jersey, lacing up your shoes, and knowing you’re ready to give it your all?” begins Cal Sports Academy, “It’s more than just a routine–it’s about setting yourself up for success. For young athletes, especially those honing their skills at a prestigious institution like Cal Sports Academy, choosing the right attire isn’t just about looking the part, it’s about crucial elements for performance, safety, and overall development.”
Whether competing with a traveling team, one’s high school, or a pick-up game in the driveway, basketball will make one fit for life.
