The Elkhart High School Marching Band–proudly known as The Pride of Elkhart–continues to make its mark this fall season…not only with award-winning performances but also with growing numbers of participants, each having a lasting impact on students.
This year, the band has seen noticeable growth within it ranks. Drum Major Mhery Parra confirms this. “The band’s number of members has increased a great amount this year. Many join the Marching Band because of their love for music and band.”
Continuing on, Parra says, “Most start off not knowing what to expect but end up sticking with the Marching Band throughout high school and come back each year because of the amazing experiences and memories it provides them.” In last year’s show, previous members commented on the competition results, stating how they didn’t exactly end where they expected; however, that didn’t ruin their mindset, and they still had fun with friends–especially on the bus rides home.Band director Mr. Riley Girton has also noticed the positivity with students joining and staying committed. He explained that while many are usually drawn in by friendships and the socialness, it’s the experience of working together, performing, and achieving so much more that inspires them to stay year after year. Each season brings new opportunities, and the sense of pride the students show on the field reflects the dedication they pour into every note and formation.
Beyond music, the Marching Band builds skills that last a lifetime. Girton emphasized that marching band gives students confidence and real-world skills. “Marching Band teaches self-discipline, time management, the benefits of hard work, and the ability to work as a team”–all things that stay with individuals long after high school. Junior Ariana Oropeza agreed, sharing this: “Even though the days are very long, it’s also very rewarding. I feel more confident in myself and my abilities, like I know I’m a part of something bigger.”Students also talked about how their mindset changes from rehearsal to showtime. “The band practices at rehearsals with a more laid-back mindset, mainly focusing on getting better and fixing their mistakes,” Parra says. “While at competitions, many are more focused on executing all their hard work; they are more confident and serious when performing.” Girton notes that strong rehearsals lead to stronger shows: “I think if the band approached every rehearsal like they were being judged on it and had an audience watching, then I think our contest performances would be a lot better.” Finding the perfect balance between the two is key.
However, The Pride of Elkhart is about more than making music. It helps students grow, learn teamwork, and build confidence. The band brings people together, spreads school spirit, and shows the hard work that makes Elkhart High School proud. Having an award-winning, spectacular performance becomes icing on the cake.
