Harry Potter fans: It’s back to school time! And, the sorting hat is hard at work determining where everyone shall go. Will it be Slytherin or Gryffindor? Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw?
Students at Elkhart High School can find out the answer–not by going to Hogwarts–but simply trekking to Krispy Kreme for their fall edition of themed doughnuts. Harry Potter now brings magic and mystery to Michiana.
Here at EHS, four students were willing to learn their fate in a sample tasting of each themed doughnut. Each of the four doughnuts was festively decorated to match a particular Hogwarts “House.” Thus, part of the “test” was to see which doughnut was most appealing visually. Likewise, each has a distinct flavor. Would each participant find the flavors correspondingly favorable? But, what about the character traits that Krispy Kreme claims to complement each House?
In an ideal world, the students would have all four elements match. That would be truly magical. However, when looking at the four respondents, the results proved otherwise.
For Senior Zoey Barber, she would rather just be surprised by the answer to all of life’s mysteries. Fortunately for her, Krispy Kreme devised a special Sorting Hat doughnut, which would reveal one’s outcome based on what color the filling inside proved to be. “I would buy the Sorting Hat just to see what my House would be!” Barber exclaimed. One bite into that mission, Barber discovered “red”–a clear sign that she was destined to be in Gryffindor. Barber was pleased but admitted that Hufflepuff would also have been acceptable.
As for the specific doughnut flavors, Slytherin was the clear winner. Complete with chocolate and vibrant green buttercream swirls,” this “spellbinding” confection was topped with chocolate sugar cookie crumbles. However, when the participants learned the character traits that go along with Slytherin, all were taken aback. Most did not identify themselves as being “cunning” or “ambitious”–all but Junior Eden Szymczak. “I’d choose Slytherin any day of the week!” she admitted.
Despite liking the flavor of a Slytherin doughnut better, Senior Yesha Granados felt her personality fit elsewhere. “I would say I’m a Ravenclaw, for sure.” That House represents “wisdom” and “creativity.” Although dipped in blueberry icing and features sprinkles, this “enchanting” doughnut simply tasted like a traditional Krispy Kreme doughnut, in Granados’ opinion. Clearly, she was looking for something a bit more out of this world.
Likewise, Sophomores Ashley Lopez and Cassandra Salazar both favored the Slytherin doughnut’s taste but gravitated toward the Hufflepuff traits of being “loyal” and “hardworking.” “I think I would have to be a Hufflepuff,” Lopez confessed. However, as appealing the “lucious” brown butter toffee flavored custard inside sounded, neither are typically attracted to doughnuts filled with anything. It may possibly be for the same reason that no one selected Gryffindor as her favorite flavor. Filled with cookie butter flavored “Kreme,” it was by far the most ornate of the three–and possibly too sweet as a result.
Those wishing to taste for themselves have only until Sept. 14 to do so. After that, the Harry Potter theme will become just another sweet memory.
