Keeping the skin safe during the summer is essential. However, many sunscreen brands that seem reliable may not be as safe as they appear.
Research shows that only about 25% of sunscreens are both safe and ultimately effective. Some sunscreens contain chemicals such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, octocrylene, and octisalate, which can lead to skin irritation and allergic reactions. When these specific chemicals are absorbed into the skin, they can potentially lead to developmental issues, hormonal imbalances, and even cancer.
Senior Destiny Peters emphasizes, “Using sunscreen is a big yes! I recommend some trusted brands like La Roche-Posay, EltaMD, and Neutrogena. Those brands are known for their excellent coverage and are often recommended by dermatologists.” Sunscreen is truly the skin’s best friend, whether sunny or cloudy. Slathering on a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is crucial during the summertime. Apply it generously about 15-30 mins before going outside, and don’t forget to reapply about every two hours, especially after sweating or swimming.
In addition to sunscreen, protective clothing can make a profound difference. Think long sleeves, hats, and sunglasses. Junior Emma Kalmar says, “I believe wearing sunglasses in the summer is a great way to keep the sun out of the eyes while also looking super cool.” A wide-brimmed hat should shield the face and neck, while sunglasses will protect the eyes from harmful UV rays. Loose-fitting, light clothes are a good choice because it reflects much more sunlight.
Timing is also important. Try avoiding being out in the sun during the sun’s peak hours, which happen to usually fall between 10 AM and 4 PM. If one necessarily has to be out between those hours, seek shade whenever it is possible. Trees, buildings, and umbrellas can offer much-needed protection and relief from the sun’s intense rays on the skin.
Finally, remember to stay hydrated. The sun can dehydrate people fairly quickly, so drinking plenty of liquids—specifically water—throughout the day can work wonders. Staying hydrated not only nourishes one’s overall health but also keeps one’s skin in better condition to handle sun exposure.
