Will IMPACT finally make an impact?
That is the hope at Elkhart High School. Starting in November 2024, the school introduced a new policy for their IMPACT period. From 3:11 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. students are offered tutoring for a subject in which they have a D or lower in through their last hour School of Study class. This new initiative can be very beneficial for students who may be struggling in a core class.
Elkhart High School senior Tristan Bryson agrees with this statement. “I think it would be helpful,” claims Bryson. “I can definitely understand why they started doing this.” Whether one needs help with biology, math, social studies, or English, he or she can get quick and guaranteed help from a teacher who specializes in that subject. However, help is only offered for a specific subject on a specific day of the week. Tuesday, for instance, is math only. Wednesday is dedicated to English; Thursday, science; and Friday, social studies. “I am in The Crossing at our school, so I am not here at school during IMPACT for tutoring,” Bryson states. “But, yes, overall I think that this is a smart policy.”
Bryson is not the only EHS student who thinks this way about the IMPACT tutoring. Elkhart High School sophomore Ryleigh Lovely agrees with Bryson’s statements. “It’s a win-win for both students and teachers,” appoints Lovely. “Students with a D or below get to have extra help to bring their grade up and the teachers will have more passing students!”
While the overall opinion on the IMPACT period policy seems to be optimistic, there are some students who think otherwise. Sophomore Melloni Olinger believes that the IMPACT tutoring sessions need to be planned out better. “When I went to English for extra help, the whole thing was kind of a mess!” Olinger exclaims. “There was only one teacher trying to help multiple students in the span of a half an hour!” Continuing, she adds, “I just think that the school should’ve spent more time planning this before announcing the policy, but I do think that the school does have the student’s best interests at heart.”
From trying to cram in all of one’s homework in the middle of the night to possibly just not understanding a subject, school can be tough. However, Elkhart High School’s IMPACT tutoring is here to offer help. Who knows, it could be that IMPACT just might now make an impact.
