Fun or foul: Is Roblox the age-appropriate game it claims to be?
Roblox is a platform where users can access over 40 million different games. There are all types of games: role play, adventure, fighting, simulators, obstacle courses, and so many more. The games can be played with other people from around the world or even friends from home. There are about 43.2 million daily active users on Roblox. Roblox games come with an in-experience chat feature; this allows players to communicate with each other. For the most part, inappropriate words or phrases are blocked and cannot be sent into the game. As with many other scenarios, people find ways to go around the precautions. This sparks the question– Is Roblox an appropriate app for kids?
In this day and age, social media is a constant part of everyone’s life. People can very easily access information and talk to strangers online. This can become a very scary encounter. It is difficult to distinguish between an appropriate kid’s game and an inappropriate kid’s game. The cartoon characters and silly graphics can be deceiving.
In this case, Roblox is a game more appropriate for the 13+ age demographic. As of a February 2023 study, 56% of users are over 13 years old, while 44% are under 13 years old. The two categories are fairly even due to the lack of awareness of its contents. Like on many online apps, there are unhinged people who create chaos online. There are users who may use foul language–or worse. This exposes younger users to explicit conversations.
Elkhart High School Senior and regular Roblox player Alya Zepeda says, “I don’t encourage little kids to play; there are many people who cuss on the mic and say rude things.” Roblox uses an in-game currency called robux. Robux can be purchased in exchange for real money. “I’ve spent around $100 on robux,” says Zepeda. Even playing the game can get pricey. Younger users may not understand this concept and can cause problems by always asking others to buy robux. Older users are aware and can purchase robux with their own money.
It is easy to be tricked by the cover of a book, movie, newspaper…and apps. The inside contents are not always what is expected. Taking precautions and checking the platforms young children use can help prevent future harm.

Totally agreed, plus, not too long ago, there was a whole group of people paying minors (usually under 12yrs old) with ROBUX, to have them regulate and edit content on discord servers and YouTube. The group would approach minors through roblox servers.
Additional note, also not too long ago, there was this server in roblox(can’t remember the name), that would put like in-game posters of nsfw images, even though it was a server that kids mostly frequented
