‘Tis The Season Of Giving…Blood

‘Tis the season to give, right? Why not consider giving blood this season?

Giving blood is a beautiful act of compassion, even when the recipient is a total stranger. And, just one pint of blood can save up to three lives.

Wichita Keen, a senior at Elkhart High School, chaired this year’s recent EHS blood drive. “The effect of people donating blood is like the saying goes: One person donating saves up to three people.” By helping organize the event at school, Keen believed she was doing her part to help save lives–especially noting current blood shortage in the area. “After hearing about the blood shortage, I knew I wanted to help in some way.” Of course, Keen was a donor herself, as well.

Despite the fact that the EHS blood drive is over, there are unlimited opportunities to donate elsewhere: Biolife Plasma Services, Elkhart General Blood Bank, and South Bend Medical Foundation Blood Donation Center, just to name a few.  “My advice to students who want to donate is that it’s not as bad as long as you have a good breakfast and are aware of your own medical conditions,” Keen states in an attempt to alleviate anyone’s fears. Her goal this holiday is to convince as many as possible to donate blood and not be scared of the process. Instead donors should focus on making a difference in someone’s life. “Keep in mind how many people you’re helping out by donating!”

So, during this season of giving, why not give the gift of life? Make a difference this year; spread some Christmas joy by simply donating blood.
