When we think of superheroes, the first thing we tend to think of are heroes such as Superman, Batman, or groups like the Fantastic Four and The Justice League. It’s typical in every comic or movie to have their accomplishments spotlighted and paraded more than their defeating downfalls.

On Sept. 14, 2008, the comic “The Umbrella Academy”  was released. The creator and writer, Gerard Way, revealed the rotten truth as to what a superhero’s life is.

On Feb. 15 Netflix brought the comic to life by premiering “The Umbrella Academy” with 10 episodes. It soon became one of Netflix’s top rated shows with an overflowing audience of over thirty million.

The storyline goes a little like this…

On Oct. 1,1989, 43 women around the world unexpectedly give birth with no signs of pregnancy. Billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves happens to learn about the births, adopting seven of the 43 children. But instead of giving them names, Hargreaves decides to use numbers.

As numbers one through six grow up, they start to acquire powers with the help of their father who put them through intense training. They acquire powers such as super strength, manipulation, time traveling, being able to contact the dead, mutation, and the ability to throw knives with outstanding accurately. The seventh child did not conform.

Throughout their teen lives, they fight evil until number five disappears when he gets stuck time traveling 50 years into the future.

As the rest grow into adults, they drift away from each other. Without warning, their father, Hargreaves, dies. Upon his death, number five comes back from the future and announces that in the upcoming days there will be an apocalypse. Because of this, the group gets back together.

However, there are two assassins trying to stop the group from the apocalypse at the same time, therefore causing a substantial amount of drama.

“The Umbrella Academy” is full of action scenes. This show was definitely one of my favorites. I was never really into superhero-like shows, but watching “The Umbrella Academy,”  without a doubt pulled me into the genre.

I would give this show a solid 10/10. I recommend it to anyone who likes scientific fiction, superhero fiction, or even romance.
